We are delighted to welcome you in the second edition of Winter ELSA Law School Tbilisi on International Migration and Refugee Law!

As a result of armed conflicts, political crisis and threat of persecution, there are millions of  forcibly displaced people worldwide. Main strategic directions in the area and solutions for migrants, refugees, internally displaced and stateless people will be therefore topics discussed during the academic programme of our Winter ELSA Law School. Additionally, during the academic program you will have a chance to acknowledge the challenges and opportunities that characterise forced displacement and migration in today’s complex global environment.

The Second edition of Winter ELSA Law School Tbilisi on International Migration and Refugee Law will be dedicated to Levan Aleksidze (5 July 1926 – 1 August 2019), Corresponding Member of the Academy Sciences of Georgia, Doctor of Jurisprudence, Senior Officer at the Department of Human Rights of the United Nations Secretariat.

Academic Programme

Participants of our Winter ELSA Law School will have an opportunity to gain basic knowledge in the field of international migration and refugee law from international, comparative, and interdisciplinary perspectives. This ELSA Law School will provide the participants with an overview on the law applicable to asylum, border management and immigration, as well as fundamental human rights.

After intensive lectures, students will be given a chance to participate in panel discussions being held by guest lecturers.

Within theoretical part students will have the unique opportunity to take part in a moot court in the field of international migration and refugee law. 

The Academic Programme will focus on the following topics:

  • General overview of international migration and refugee law;
  • The principle of non-refoulement;
  • Human rights of internally displaced persons, refugees, migrants, asylum seekers;
  • Trafficking on migration routes to Europe;
  • Social and economic inclusion of migrants;
  • Civil protection policies of migrants and refugees in the EU;
  • Migration Strategy of Eastern Partnership Countries;
  • Asylum and migration-management challenges of the new decade.
