SELS Coimbra on Human Rights and Sustainability

Description

The Law School on Human Rights and Sustainability will take place in Coimbra, Portugal, from July 20- July 27, 2025. The Organising Committee is dedicated, creative, experienced, dynamic and innovative. We have a strong track record of delivering high-quality events that combine academic excellence with a stimulating and inclusive environment. Our commitment ensures an enriching experience for participants, fostering meaningful discussions and impactful learning opportunities.

The host city is most well-known for its rich academic tradition and historic significance. Often referred to as the “City of Students”, Coimbra is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its vibrant atmosphere blends centuries of history with youthful energy, creating a unique cultural experience. The culture in Coimbra is deeply shaped by remarkable traditions such as the "Fado de Coimbra" (a melancholic and poetic music style sung by students) and annual academic festivities like the "Queima das Fitas". The city also boasts impressive architecture, cobbled streets and a strong sense of community.

Our SELS will give you the opportunity to study Human Rights and Sustainability. The focus of the Academic programme lies in deepening the participants' legal knowledge of these two topics and the intersection between them, by attending interesting lectures and roundtables with experts, where you are expected to participate. The programme will conclude with an exciting Model UN, offering you the chance to apply your knowledge in a dynamic and interactive setting.

Our goal is to introduce participants to Coimbra's rich culture and ensure you feel like a part of it throughout the week. In order to achieve that, our social and cultural programme includes stand-up paddle on the Mondego River; guided tours of historical monuments, including the University of Coimbra and the Joanina Library; exploring the city's charming streets and hidden gems; picnic in one of the city's scenic parks, like the "Parque Verde do Mondego"; pub crawl (a local food and drink tasting tour across traditional taverns); karaoke night for a fun and relaxed atmosphere; dinners at traditional university restaurants.

Attending a Summer ELSA Law School is undoubtedly a once in a lifetime experience for anyone who wants to balance their insatiable desire to learn with an avid interest in establishing beautiful connections with people from all corners of the world. The members of our OC, living up to the generosity and friendliness that characterize the Portuguese people so well, will ensure that you never feel alone! In Coimbra, in particular, it's no wonder that nostalgic poems, reflecting the love of those who have experienced the spirit of this city, echo from generation to generation. Once you've fully experienced the week we're preparing for you, you'll understand the true meaning of the (untranslatable) word “Saudade”.
