Thessaloniki – Public Law and Technology

Description

ELSA Thessaloniki is organising the eighth SELS Thessaloniki on Public Law and Technology, which will take place from July 11 - 18, 2024. Held in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece, our SELS is an opportunity for Participants to have the ultimate Greek summer experience whilst discovering new possibilities and enhancing their legal background.

Thessaloniki is known for its vibrant culture and rich history dating back to ancient times. It has long functioned as an important crossroads of various civilisations, each leaving its distinctive mark on the city, creating a colourful mosaic of images for visitors to marvel at. While honouring its glorious past, Thessaloniki still embraces the new, earning its place as a modern innovation hub in which new ideas and technologies can thrive.

The topic of this year's SELS will be Public Law and Technology, and more specifically, Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Transformation of Public Administration. The focus of the Academic Programme will be to deepen Participants' knowledge regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the administrative justice system and public administration in general, covering aspects such as cybersecurity, digital platforms regulation and data protection. Comprising lectures, workshops, panel discussions, moot courts etc, the Academic Programme of our SELS will be delivered by experienced speakers, including AI engineers, researchers, lawyers and professors, under the supervision of our academic partner, i.e. the National Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Personal Data and Digital Governance Law.

While diving into Public Law and Technology, Participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in a unique cultural experience by visiting ancient landmarks (dating from the Roman and Byzantine eras) and major museums displaying elements from the city's enthralling history.  Thessaloniki is famed for its delectable cuisine, which is probably the best in Greece (careful, you didn't hear that from us). However, its key selling point during the hot summer months is its proximity to the sea and, drum roll please, Participants will have the opportunity to spend an entire day at the beach (strongly advised to bring their sunscreen). Last but not least, Thessaloniki abounds with university students, so it's natural that the city's nightlife is legendary, setting the tone for an unforgettable Social programme.

All things considered, this particular SELS is bound to meet Participants' expectations (academic, cultural, and entertainment-related) or even exceed them (hopefully)!
