WELS Brussels on New Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Law

Description

ELSA Brussels is organising the fifth edition of the Winter ELSA Law School Brussels on New Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Law. The event will take place from February 23 - March 2, 2025. The students will be welcomed by ELSA Brussels and will participate in a varied academic and social programmes.

The focus of the Winter ELSA Law School lies in the deepening of the legal knowledge of the participants. However, ELSA Brussels will also offer cultural and social activities, such as visits to the city of Brussels and visits to the European Union institutions, as well as evening events. The Winter ELSA Law School will allow young lawyers or students to expand their network and evolve in an international environment.

In view of the significant progress made in the field of computer science, algorithmic systems can now efficiently process large amounts of data and make decisions more or less autonomously. Numerous sectors of activity make use of algorithms, which contribute to everyday decision-making. These decisions produce legal effects which are imposed on people.

Numerous questions arise: What law applies to the actions of algorithms? Can AI be held responsible for their actions? How can these acts be qualified? How does current law regulate the use of new technologies?

Many questions will be answered at our Winter ELSA Law School. The event will provide participants with a general overview of the subject matter of Digital Law.

Academic Programme

The Academic Programme of our WELS will consist of intensive courses on New Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Law. The event will bring together some of the most renowned Belgian experts in the field, most of them legal scholars and professors. We have also invited members of the Digital Development Unit of the Council of Europe (some of whom have already participated in our successful Webinar Academy on New Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Law). As far as the content of the Academic Programme is concerned, we hope to provide our participants with the basics and different components of New Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Data Law, so that they can understand, through active discussions and seminars, the issues raised by this relatively new area of law.
